About Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry eyes are very common, but left unaddressed, they can become debilitating.
Dry eye symptoms include:
✔ Sandy, gritty or burning feeling
✔ Itching or stinging
✔ Redness of the eyes
✔ Sensitivity to light
✔ Heavy eyelids
✔ Contact lens discomfort
✔ Decreased tolerance for reading or working on computers
✔ Fatigued or aching eyes
✔ Filmy, blurred vision
What causes Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry eye syndrome is caused by a disruption in the tear production process. Under normal conditions, the surface of the eye is covered by a thin tear film that keeps the eyes adequately lubricated and maintains optimal vision. This tear film consists of three layers:
-
Inner layer: Mucin Layer
Secreted by corneal epithelial cells, located at the base of the tear film, it enhances the adhesion and spread of the tear film.
-
Middle layer: Aqueous Layer
Secreted by the lacrimal glands, located in the middle of the tear film, it nourishes and protects the cornea.
-
Outer layer: Lipid Layer
Secreted by the meibomian glands, located on the outermost surface of the tear film, it prevents or slows down the evaporation of the aqueous layer.

These three layers of the tear film are closely interrelated and influence one another. Damage or deficiency in any one layer can disrupt the overall stability of the tear film, reducing its ability to lubricate the eye surface and leading to dry eye symptoms.
Main causes of dry eye syndrome can be summarized as follows:
-
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
This is a chronic inflammatory condition in which the meibomian glands produce less lipid, causing excessive evaporation of tears.
-
Long-term contact lens wear
Contact lenses cover the cornea, which can lead to insufficient oxygen and nutrients reaching corneal cells. Bacteria and deposits on the lenses can also trigger inflammation, all of which affect tear film stability and production.
-
Aging
The prevalence of dry eye syndrome increases significantly with age. As people get older, the function of both the lacrimal glands and meibomian glands declines, resulting in reduced quantity and quality of tears.
-
Other factors
Air pollution, seasonal or environmental conditions, eye surgeries (such as LASIK laser eye surgery), side effects of certain medications, and more.
